Rational Perception I first saw BIRTH live at the Detroit Inst. of the Arts in 2002 where my mind exploded, and they remain one of my favorite groups. Their music is so deep and original. This album has been a long time coming, so I'm excited to get more of their sound. Favorite track: Heist.

Almost Never, releases by BIRTH in 2019, marks the return of this uncompromising saxophone, bass, drums trio of Joshua Smith, Jeremy Bleich, and Joe Tomino. Their sound was carved out and honed through performing, touring, and collaborating with and alongside many notable avant jazz and creative music artists in the early 2000’s. Bringing electronics, free jazz, new music composition, and rock elements into the fold set this group aside from traditional jazz groups of the time and garnered interest and appreciation from an audience bent on deep listening and seeking new sounds. This release evolves their unique musical language even further with a new set of compositions and near telepathic improvisations that the group is known for. Featuring their signature energy and irreverence, melded with decades of connective improvising and rapport, this is BIRTH’s finest offering to date.
